Project 5 Plan

Who-

The who for this shoot will be two different people for the two different ads. The first will be one of my guy buddies that looks like a GQ model kind of. Meaning that he is very clean cut and dignified. For the Italian Vogue shoot I will be using my lovely girlfriend if she is willing to help out once again. I chose her because she has a very exotic european look to her that I think will really work well to sell this photo as an Italian Vogue ad.

What-

The product that I will be shooting for this advertisement campaign will be Velocity exercise shoes. I chose to go with this product because I think that it is one of the few products that fits the name. It is also one of the only products that fits for both a men's and women's magazine. I will also be able to use the shoes on my models and have them moving fast so I can capture the motion that is necessary for this assignment.

Where-

For both shots I want a very urban and modern feeling setting, so i will be most likely working on campus at either the math science building or the union or one of the other newer looking buildings on campus. I am doing this because both magaizines feature very high class and modern ads and I want to follow suit for these images.

When-

I will be shooting these images over the next week. I would like to catch a day that is overcast to give the images a very european feel to them.

Why-

I chose to use these models and products because I feel that I will be able to best complete the assignment approaching it this way.

How-

I plan to do similar shots for both ads. I want to focus mainly on the shoes so I will be shooting up from a low position. I want to dress my models in elegant and nice clothes and have them wearing exercise shoes. I will be trying the slow shutter speed panning technique to try and get a blurred background with my models in focus to show that they move fast with these shoes on.

Project 4

Project 4 Final Image

Project 4 Rationale

Why-

This shoot was fun because I got to go play drums at one of my favorite scenic spots around Wood county. I chose to do the shoot on the very top of a 30 foot cliff face over looking the Maumee river and the old bridge that used to cross it in Waterville. When the weather is nice I like to pack up my drums and head out on a country cruise and usually end up at the river to play some drums and enjoy nature. Playing on the edge of the cliff and looking out at the beautiful scenery really centers me and makes me feel connected to this crazy big rock hurling through space. The song that I chose for this assignment was STS9 "Music, Us", which is a beautiful song about how all we really need is love. Whether that would be love of music, nature, or everyone in our lives. Music is my passion, my creative outlet, my anger management, and my religion all rolled into one so this song really represents me and the photo very well. I wanted to show myself in my true element, drumming and taking in all the scenic beauty.

How-

I had to risk life and lim for this particular shoot. In the final image you see me sitting on my drum on the edge of a cliff face looking out at the bridge and river. What you don't see is that the tripod is on the very edge of a similar cliff right next to where I was sitting. So in order to set the shot up I was hanging off this cliff trying to look through the view finder to get the shot exposed right and get the shot in focus. After I had the shot in focus I used the self timer on the camera to get the shots. I tried a few different angles from this particular location but I thought that the final image I chose was the strongest. I used the rule of thirds for this shot and was very please with the outcome.

Critique-

I was very pleased with how this shoot went overall. I was able to compose three different images that were all pretty strong. The one image I wasn't able to get the right focus so I wasn't able to use any of the shots I took from that location. The other two spots I was able to get in focus and they both turned out some really strong images. But for this assignment I thought that the one where you can see my face looking out at the river was the best.

Project 3

Project 3 Rationale

Why-

For this shoot I chose to shoot my band members and their instruments. This seemed like a really good idea because I will be shooting most of our promotional photography for the band in the upcoming years. I have never done a photo shoot in a studio with a lighting setup before so some of the shoot was very experimental. I wasn't sure of how much space I had to work with and how many people I could work into a shot at the same time. So I messed around with group shots with props, group shots without props, and individual shots with props. At the end of the shoot I ended up liking the individual shots the most. The group shots looked very forced and rigid, which is very different from how we are as a band.

How-

Coming into this shoot I wanted to have the whole group standing around me as i was sitting on my bass kick drum. In theory and in my head it looked really good but once we got into the studio space was a problem. I couldn't get back far enough to get the kick drum in shot and get all our faces too. So i through that idea out the window and just started trying different things. Working with one model is hard enough, but trying to get three semi-ADD guys to stand still was a real challenge. Once I would get one person's shadows under control someone else will have messed theirs up again waiting to take the shot. But i found that keeping everybody laughing and keeping it real casual worked to my advantage.

Critique-

Overall I liked the composition of most shots that I took, except for the entire group shot. We had to angle our bodies in such a posed way that it looked very forced, almost like a senior picture for all of us. So i ended up going with one of the more casual individual shots. I told Evan, the guitar player to throw his hair back and look cool while i was getting the exposure correct and I ended really liking the way it turned out. I feel like hey really looks like a rock star in a guitar magazine advertisement. The levels all turned out well and I was very pleased with the final product.
